Teal Toes - September - Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. I recently held a contest and gave away Teal Toes polishes (Diamond Cosmetics - Don't Teal My Heart) to people who follow my blog, facebook, twitter, several other people who I do swaps with in other countries and 5 more in FB Beauty/Nail Polish groups that I'm a member in. In all, almost 2 dozen bottles. This was made possible because of a very caring man named George Kyricos Stamas. He ordered I don't know how many hundreds of polishes for this cause and shipped them to other's to help spread the word. He used his own money to do all of this. The only thing I can say I did was take the time to spread the word through as many avenues as I could, wrap and ship the polishes to everyone.

You can learn more about this cancer awareness group by going to their Facebook at Teal Toes, or their website www.tealtoes.org . There is also an event planned on Facebook and you can read more about it here Wear Teal Day.

Just a note, you can wear any brand of teal polish you want to help support this cause. And if you don't wear polish then you can wear teal clothes or both....or just pass the word along to someone else. If anyone knows of any Teal polishes that easily accessible right now, please leave them in the comments to share with others. What are you doing to support this cause?

Nfu-Oh Aqua Base...Worth it? Necessary?

Tonight I was doing swatches of some holographic polishes that I haven't tried yet. Nfu-Oh's, Essences from Europe and BK's from Hong Kong. And the question that keeps coming up, is the Nfu-Oh Aqua Base really necessary? Isn't there a cheaper easier to access brand available? I've seen this asked more than anything else recently and it even came up in our Nail Polish and Gossip Group on Facebook. I'm going to let you answer this question for yourself, here are pictures I took, all using Nfu-Oh #66 Green Holographic polish. On the first picture, on my thumb, middle and pinky finger, I used the Nfu-Oh Aqua base coat, on the ring and pointer finger I used another well known brand of base coat. This is one coat of polish and I didn't clean up since I was taking it right back off. You can click the pictures to enlarge.

I only used one coat, I didn't want to waste any more of this beautiful polish, but you can tell it does not play well with other base coats. The next two pictures I decided to try 10 different base coats. On my pinky (left hand) of the first picture is the Nfu-Oh Aqua Base. Second picture is of my right hand and it's a little blurry, I turned my camera upside down and then had to flip the picture.

In my opinion, none of the other base coats compared to the Nfu-Oh Aqua Base for their holographic polishes and it does make my other holo's look better too. I could have used 3 or 4 coats to make it opaque and cover the bald spots better, but that's kind of defeating the purpose. When I tried the Nfu-Oh #61 Holo Silver with the Aqua Base it also lasted longer, 3 full days. I have had one other suggestion that I haven't tried, and that's LA Girls Base Coat, it has a blue tint, and as soon as I find it, I will try it for you. Several people have said they had success with it and it's found at the dollar stores. If you are going to spend this much money on holographic polishes, I think it's worth the price of the Aqua Base for the coverage and longer wear. What has been your experience? Any suggestions, hints and comments are appreciated and read!

Ruffian Mani with some Bling - Guest Post by Tricia

Today Tricia is bringing you some more of her beautiful nail art. This is a Ruffian Manicure with some extra bling added. I am just learning how to do some forms of nail art and hope to bring you some in the future.

1) Paint nail with black polish
2) Using silver striper paint the deep smile line as a guide
3) Fill in with silver polish to cover desired area
4) While silver polish is still wet apply silver holographic foil flakes
5) Finish with sealer

Items used:
Color club- Where's The Soiree (a very pigmented Black)
Art Club- solid silver nail striper
Color club- Sex Symbol
Art club- Silver Ice Pieces(silver Holographic foil/mylar flakes)
Art club- sealer
(On natural nails, I would definitely use a base coat for a longer lasting manicure)
NOTE: Sex symbol is a silver glitter polish, I had to use 2 coats to get full coverage. I used that silver because my solid silver was broken. If using a solid silver polish, 1 coat would be good, since it just creates a background for the foil flakes. I plan on doing this same design using Gold polish with gold foil flakes to see which I like better. The art club foil flakes are sold at Sally's Beauty Supply.

Zoya's Jem from the Mirrors Collection - Fall 2011

Today I'm bringing you another beautiful polish, Jem, from the Mirrors Collection from Fall 2011. Zoya describes her as: A dark red-toned purple base with metallic dark pink highlights and subtle gold duochrome flecks.? This shade has it all; bold color, vampy drama, bright sparkle and a glam rock persona.? On their 1-5 Opaque scale, it is listed as a 5.
I used a base coat, 2 coats of color and a top coat for this polish. It applied smoothly and it only took 2 coats to cover completely. This color has been compared to another one of Zoya's polishes, Valerie. I have both polishes and they are in the same color family, but I can also see differences. Do you need both colors? Which one would I pick between the two? That's up to you, I like having both.

What are your thoughts about this polish? I love the darker Fall/Winter colors. You can find Zoya polishes at www.Zoya.com and at Ulta. They retail for $8. Zoya often does promotions on the Facebook page and you need to sign up ahead of time on their website to participate. Their facebook is a great place to ask questions, get information and share pictures of your manicures.

Marbling Made Easy Tutorial- Guest Post by Tricia

I got Color club's new Back to Boho collection today and just wanted to try them out, so I decided to share a way to do marble without all the mess. Its a great way to do marble toes. I personally hate doing water marbling, its too messy and does not always turn out right(depending on the temperature and brand of polish etc.) Its also a bit time consuming, since the water has to be dried thoroughly before top coat application. Using this method, the designs can be pre- made and just applied when wanted. Here's what to use:

Nail polishes (I used Color club's Blue Topia & Shabby drab)
Toothpick
Plastic paper/ wax paper
Metal pusher

*note: Plastic paper should be a thick and strong, like a ziplock bag material. Its should be strong enough not to be torn easily and smooth/glossy enough so that the polish can be peeled off with easy.

1)lay a generous amount of nail polish on paper
2)Add drops of other colors
3)using the toothpick draw lines to create marble designs
4)Leave to dry for about an hour
5)When dry, gently peel off the paper, and cut into pieces large enough to cover nails
6)Apply base coat to natural nails
7)Wrap marble design on nail while base coat is slightly wet, press and smooth it with finger tips so it sticks onto nails well
8)Using a metal pusher press along the corners of the nail then tear off the excess around the nail and free edge.
9)Apply top coat

* Dried polish can also be cut into the exact shape of nail to avoid step 8 and just pressed on. It can also be cut into a perfect french shape to cover nail tips.

The other colors I used on the remaining fingers were Antiquated, Perfect Mol-ten, hot like lava.

Great Tutorial Tricia! If you would like to see more of Tricia's work, check her out on facebook at Tricia's Nail Artistry. What do you think about this? Are you going to try it?

Nail Care Tips From Tricia - Part 1

Having manicures is not only about polishing nails, its about taking care of your hands and nails. There are many myths about nails so I will try and cover a few popular ones as well. I have many tips to share so I'll do it in parts. This is part 1.
1)Never peel nail polish or gel polishes off your nails. It does severe damages on nail plates. Not only are you peeling off the product on the nails, but also top layers of the nail plate is being peeled off as well, thus making them weak and brittle. Please follow proper removal procedure to remove products from nails.
2)Prior to product removal, apply cuticle oils around skin of nails to prevent removing solvents from drying out surrounding skin. Dry skin = hang nails...hang nails are not our friends!
3)Prior to polishing nails, clean nail plate with 99% alcohol, it removes all oils/lotion residue from nails. There are many different nail cleansers sold, but they all consist of alcohol, if you can afford to purchase a nail prep, by all means do, but 99% alcohol works just as fine. A clean nail plate is responsible for a longer lasting manicure.
4)Dry nails before polish. Nails are porous, they absorb water like a sponge. When its absorbs water, it swells, not visible to the naked eyes, but it does. As it dries, it goes back to its normal size, if polish is put onto a swollen nail, it chips much faster as it reduces in size. So to prevent chipping from the start, polish dry nails. Alcohol not only cleanse the nail, but it also dehydrates the nail, so again I stress to prep nails with alcohol.
5) Humans have nails not claws, we are not animals so we should not use our nails as animals use their claws. Use finger tips to pick up stuff rather than nails. Gloves should be worn when there is excessive water exposure (due to the nail being porous as mentioned above)
6)Clean under nails. Many people neglect under their nails. They look at the well polished top and thinks its perfect. Dirt and bacteria tends to accumulate under the free edge quite quickly and usually goes unnoticed when nails are polished. Many times that dirt ends up in our mouth, due to having hands in our mouth when we eat finger foods, or bite our nails. Having bad bacteria in our stomach cause various gastro-intestinal diseases. Use a nail brush or orange wood stick and clean under nails with soap and water daily.
7) File nails correctly. Filing from side to side can weaken nails, when filing, go from corner to center, in one direction. In my opinion, a glass file is a very good tool to use since it files very smooth, unlike emery board files. It is also better to sanitize since I wash the dust off then pop it in my sanitizer. Paper files are disposable since cannot be washed or soaked in any disinfectant liquid.
8)Nails dont breathe. It is made up of keratin (like our hair) and dont require oxygen. The nail is made up of different parts, the living tissues are not visible as its under our skin and the only part we can see is our nail plate, which is dead. This is why some suffer from weaken nails, because once we remove a layer of that nail plate, it will not grow back. As the nail grows out, the new growth area will be stronger than the already weaken exposed area of the nail plate.
What about nail hardeners? I will discuss that next time.
Hope you found my tips to be helpful :)
You can see more of Tricia's work and tips on her facebook at Tricia's Nail Artistry. I am so looking forward to Part 2 in this series.

Zoya's Marina from the Mirrors Collection Fall 2011

Zoya's Marina is my 2nd review of colors from the new Mirrors Fall 2011 Collection. This is a very unique color in my collection and I'm glad I added it. Zoya describes her as: A strongly blue-toned smoky silver-grey with a dusty metallic finish. A blue smoke shade to give a dreamy artistic look to the nails. On the opaque scale of 1-5, Marina is listed as a 5. I used a base coat, 2 coats of color and a top coat. Application was flawless, very smooth application. This will be one of my favorite Fall colors! You can click on the photos to enlarge them.

Zoya can be ordered from Zoya.com and purchased at select retailers, polishes retail for $8 each. Have you tried Zoya yet and/or one of the fall colors? What is your favorite Zoya color?

Le Metier De Beaute - Silk Road/Where East Meets West - Fall/Winter 2011 Collection

This is my second review for Le Metier De Beaute Nail Lacquers and I am just blown away by the colors yet again! The new 2011 Fall/Winter Collection is called Silk Road - Where East Meets West, you can read more about the naming of this collection on the Press Release. Application can be a little tricky with the lacquers because of the size of the bottle and brush being small, but the formula is so smooth it makes up for the size of the brush. You can click on each picture to enlarge it.

Dynasty, Anatolia, Silk Road, Urban Dweller

Dynasty - a deep, shimmering fuchsia.

Anatolia - a rich plum illuminated with bronzy, golden shimmer.

Silk Road - a metallic, bronzed copper.

Urban Dweller - a rich chocolate plum with golden effervescence.

Specifically formulated to be 3-Free, Proposition 65-compliant and fortified with strengthening proteins and hydrators, Le Metier de Beaute Nail Lacquers are highly pigmented for rich, glossy, long-wearing color.

The Silk Road/Where East Meets West Collection will be available September 2011 in Neiman Marcus, neimanmarcus.com, select Nordstrom Stores and nordstrom.com. Suggested retail price $10 each. Samples were provided for review by company but does not effect my review in any way.

Which color is your favorite? Which one do you think looks best with my skin tone?
